Last month, Americans watched as GOP nominees met in Milwaukee Wisconsin for the first GOP debate. One thing that was missing during the debate was Donald Trump, who instead went on FOX news for a sit-down interview with Tucker Carlson, a commentary host formally known for his work at FOX news. Amid all the allegations against Trump, he is leading the current GOP Party by an astounding 52% according to a poll by ABC News. Here recently, there has been a ton of controversy with Trump in the GOP race.
The Collegian sat down with the campus Chaplin Dr. Robert Brewer to ask a few questions regarding the debate. When asked if the future president should pardon Donald Trump if convicted of crimes and sentenced to jail, Dr. Brewer believes this should not happen; moreover, he believes that Donald Trump should not be in the race to begin with. Dr. Brewer is not the only one with this belief. According to a poll done by Quinnipiac University, polls show that 54% of Americans believe that Trump’s alleged crimes are a serious matter and that he should be convicted.
Asked if he thought any of the candidates stood out, Dr. Brewer said, “I thought Nikki Haley had some good points out of all the candidates.” He added that he liked how Haley was honest about the economy and pointed out that both sides (Republicans and Democrats) contributed to the high debt due to the Covid stimulus bill passed in 2020.
Finally, when asked what he thought was the most important problem facing America right now, Dr. Brewer stated that he believes division is the most crucial issue in America. The next GOP debate is scheduled for September 27, 2023, in Semi Valley, California.
