On September 9, Sofia Pagnamenta, goalkeeper for the Greensboro College women’s soccer team, was named the Defensive Player of the Week. Over the week, Pagnamenta proved herself to be a strong goalkeeper as the team posted an 0-1-1 record, which includes one shutout.
Pagnamenta is a sophomore aspiring to earn a degree in Exercise Science with a desire to become a sports conditioning coach following graduation. She is the daughter of Alan and Jennifer Pagnamenta and was born in Woodbury, Connecticut. During her high school years in Connecticut, she was a three-sport athlete. One of the reasons Pagnamenta chose Greensboro College was the warmer weather.
When Pagnamenta won Defensive Player of the Week, the women’s soccer team played two hard-fought matches against Salisbury University and St. Mary’s College of Maryland. Pagnamenta played phenomenal in these two matches, only allowing a total of two goals and stopped 25 shots.
Against Salisbury University, GC was unable to get the win but Pagnamenta played great as she had 17 saves. Against St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the match ended in a draw with Pagnamenta standing strong as she stopped all eight shots she faced. Pagnamenta most definitely deserved the Defensive Player of the Week award.
Thus far, Pagnamenta has played in six games as the goalkeeper. She has already had 47 saves, has only allowed four goals and has led three shutout games. With Pagnamenta as goalkeeper, the team has a record of 2-2-2.
The women’s soccer team will have a very successful season if Pagnamenta keeps up her outstanding play. Let us give the team our support as they fight through the rest of this season.
