Work study is a great opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience and a little extra funds while on campus. There are approximately 100 positions in over 40 different offices in the program. Greensboro College seeks a multitude of students who would be willing to fill the roles given by the Federal Work Study Program.
The Federal Work Study Program grants students the opportunity to get great work experience while completing their studies as well. The program does a great job of accommodating to the student’s schedule. There are an absurd number of jobs on campus you may not be aware of. Some work study opportunities on-campus consist of working at the front desk at the Reynold’s Center, the library or the cafeteria, as well as working for the Global Communications Center (GCC), the admissions office and The Collegian.
I got a chance to ask sophomore Lane McDowell about his experience in the Work Study program. He said, “Work Study gives me time to do my homework and catch up with my schoolwork while also doing my job at the front desk of Reynolds.” He also added, “The pay is very good for the work you are doing, and the time management is very professional and not overloading.”
With the vast number of jobs on-campus, there are a few off-campus work study jobs that can be considered overlooked. I got a chance to talk to Student Financial Services Coordinator Joan-Springett Coscia and ask about these off-campus work study jobs that are not being taken advantage of. When asked about these jobs, she said, “The off-campus job sites are The Miriam P. Brenner Children’s Museum, Reading Connections Inc. and Shift_ed.” The list of jobs presented are great opportunities to build a resume for some students. The Miriam P. Brenner Children’s Museum offers positions in guest services, marketing and fundraising and education. Reading Connections Inc. offers positions for program office assistants, Child Assessment Coordinators and small-group tutors. Lastly, “Shift_ed” offers the opportunity for work study students to tutor one-on-one with elementary school children at schools in the immediate Guilford County area.
Work Study is a need-based program and sadly not every student is eligible to engage in it. Students who are interested need to be onboarded by the Human Resources department on campus. After this process, students are free to select the job they seek to do and then set up their schedules to not interfere with their educations. If you are interested, you may reach out to Student Financial Services for more information.
