Bright future for GC golf

by Griffin Powell

With the fall portion of Greensboro College golf’s season coming to a close, the Pride looks to build upon the strong foundation of what they already have going into the spring. Standing out due to his strong performances in various tournaments, freshman Preston Worch has become a key pillar to the Greensboro College golf team and their future. Amassing now two USA South Rookie of the Week awards and a Golfer of the Week Award, The Collegian got a chance to speak with Preston on what drives him and how it feels to win such amazing accomplishments.

Freshman Preston Worch, from Rockville, Maryland has already won a multitude of awards despite his short time here at GC. Such a feat requires constant practice and mental stability. Playing since the age of three, and competitively since the age of 12, it is safe to say Preston has what it takes to be a great competitor. In order to have such sheer drive and competitiveness though, you must have some sort of inspiration. Worch says his biggest inspiration to keep him going everyday are his parents. He states, “My parents inspire me the most because they have made the unselfish sacrifices for me to play collegiate golf.”

Golf is a game that takes numerous hours to master. It is not fit for everyone as it also takes a great deal of mental toughness to stay engaged for all 18 holes. Worch works day in and day out to get his game to the point it needs to be to prepare for a tournament. When asked about his preparation he said, “I practice every day to perfect my craft. I also get my rest accordingly to my schedule and eat the right things so I am feeling my best when I am ready to tee off for a round.”

Receiving an award for USA South Rookie of the Week Award is an amazing accomplishment, but receiving the award twice is even better. When asked what it meant to win an award like this, Worch said, “Winning an award like this is a great feeling. Setting the foundation early for what is to come in our season is amazing as well.” He also added, “Having coaches who believe in your ability so much like Coach Brock and Coach Johnson is also a great help because it makes me strive to play my best day in and day out.”

As the Pride’s first half of the golf season ends, it has been apparent that Worch’s performance has set a high standard for the golf team. They look to move forward and have a better spring than they did fall. With this, there is a very bright future for Greensboro College men’s golf.
