On November 1, in the student center, the Lyre and Sankofa Center co-sponsored an open mic night hosted by Matthew Johnson, the Assistant Director of Marketing and Communications. It was hosted in hopes that students will be encouraged to submit their pieces to the Lyre, Greensboro College’s literary arts magazine.

Both advisors of the Lyre and Sankofa center, Dr. Wayne Johns and Juliet Lowery, were present. Lowery even read a few pieces about diversity and acceptance, including “Black Gold” by Esperanza Spalding. Multiple students shared a few of their own pieces. Freshman Reagen Anderson sung a few of her songs: “Cold Blood,” “Crush” and “Rainy Days.” With pizza and poetry, everyone involved with the open mic night had a wonderful time and enjoyed the event.

If you are interested in contributing to the Lyre, email thelyre11@gmail.com to submit any piece of writing, art or other creative pieces. The next reading day hosted by the Lyre will be on Showcase Day, November 29. Look out for flyers with more details as the day approaches, or follow @thelyregc on Instagram for updates.
