The Greensboro College student newspaper, The Collegian, recently received significant recognition at the annual North Carolina College Media Association (NCCMA) conference hosted this year by High Point University on February 24. The NCCMA recognizes the quality material of student journalists, creative writers, website designers, artists and photographers who contribute to their college’s student publications.
The Collegian, representing Greensboro College in the small school category (schools under 8,500 undergraduate enrollment), clinched a prestigious Best of Show award in Online News. This accomplishment demonstrates the commitment of the web team, led by Xypher Pino. Readers can explore the award-winning content at https://thegccollegian.com.
Breanna Adamick’s article “In remembrance of Seth Mandryk,” published in the April 19, 2023, issue, earned her an Honorable Mention in feature writing, adding to the accolades of GC’s talented journalists.
Sarai Acosta’s “Inconsistent NC Climate” from the October 11, 2023, issue and alumnus Gavin Mann’s “Blood Drive” from March 15, 2023, saw the two artists receiving Honorable Mentions in the cartoon category in recognition of their outstanding artwork.
Sarai Acosta’s creative artwork was further recognized in the graphic/illustration category, as her piece “NC Pet Partners visit GC in their time of need,” featured in the April 19, 2023, issue, secured third place, showcasing the creative talent within the Greensboro College Collegian.
In addition, Xypher Pino was awarded the Student Media Stipend of $250 in support of The Collegian’s innovative podcast. This recognition highlights the growth of the podcast, even with the podcast being a newly added segment to The Collegian.

GC’s literary magazine, The Lyre, was also recognized in competition with other North Carolina colleges and universities, as former GC student Vincent Moody earned an Honorable Mention in poetry for his excellent piece “Getting Through the Seasons,” featured in the 2022-23 issue of The Lyre.
In conclusion, staff members able to attend the NCCMA Conference had the great opportunity to represent Greensboro College at the prestigious event, as well as compete against other colleges in North Carolina. The Collegian had an excellent showing at the North Carolina College Media Association awards, and in looking forward to next year, it was announced that the conference will be hosted by Appalachian State University in 2025. We at The Collegian will stay focused on our commitment to excellence and strive for further achievements as we prepare for the next North Carolina College Media Association conference.
