Recently, former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again come into the spotlight of the news. A non-surprising case was filed against him where he and his companies are being fined $355 million as a result of lying on various wealth records in the state of New York. To add to this, the judge ruled that Trump, for the next three years, will be banned and unable to serve as a director for any New York corporation.
According to an article done by ABC News, analysts believe Trump’s lawsuit could be a lot higher than it is. They estimate that because of interest, the lawsuit will actually amount to a staggering $455 million instead.
This case against Trump comes with mixed reactions amongst both democratic and republican parties, and of course, the typical cries from Trump’s loyal fan base proclaiming that this is again another witch hunt against them.
The Collegian had the opportunity to sit down with Dr. Victor Archibong, a political science professor here at Greensboro College, to ask some questions regarding this case. When asked about his initial thoughts on hearing this case, Archibong stated, “Honestly, hearing this was not unusual. We live in a country where no one is above the law and if he is found guilty, he should be held accountable.” Archibong also added that Trump should still have the right to appeal the court’s decision.
Another question that the Collegian asked Archibong was regarding if he believed this would have any implications for the 2024 election. Archibong believes that this will not affect Trump’s fan base whatsoever and states that regardless of what comes against Trump, there will always be support for him.
As of writing this, Trump has filed an appeal for this case but it was quickly shut down by the court judge. Trump and his team are currently building up their appeal after hearing that the New York judge, along with the prosecutors, are trying to “ruin his great business and good fortune,” according to an article by ABC News.
