Here at Greensboro College, residential advisors (RA) serve important roles in the dorming experience by helping them in any way and organizing many things. The Collegian had the chance to speak with senior RA Courtney Jamison and sophomore RA Logan Vacharasin and they were able to give insight on what they do and what duties they fulfill.
Jamison, from Virginia, decided to become an advisor because she thought it would be nice to help new students to adjust to the dorm life. Her scholarship also requires her to live on campus anyway, so she thought it would be convenient to become an RA. Jamison resides in Greensboro Hall, the all-female dorm. When asked about her day-to-day activities and requirements to fulfill regarding RA work, she responded with explaining how “it is not so much the day to day as it is doing month to month activities like redesigning my bulletin board.”

Vacharasin from Tampa, Florida, also has similar tasks from month to month. He is an advisor for West Hall, the all-male dorm, and just like Courtney, also likes to help out new and upcoming students with this transition.
Another thing included in the RA experience is several different perks and benefits they receive. When asked about his favorite benefits, Vacharasin noted that the. “discounted meal plan and the single room being cheaper is amazing.” Jamison added on top of this and mentioned how the free parking pass has been a big help. An RA benefit that may not come to the top of your mind is the social aspect that comes in – something that makes the college experience a lot better. Every RA here at Greensboro is super inclusive and would love to have a conversation with you about anything, that is why it is super enjoyable to attend their social events when you have the time.

RA events are fun and a great way to go out there and meet new people on campus. Just a week ago, Vacharasin and the other advisors organized an event called “Hot topics, hot pizza” where they got pizza delivered and were able to talk about controversial topics happening in the world today. For Greensboro Hall, Jamison had a game night at the beginning of the year which was a great success and was a lot of fun for the crowd who showed up. If you missed these events, do not worry there will be more upcoming soon. Jamison is organizing a social that will have the chief of security join the students, a great experience to learn more about the law and how to get involved. Vacharasin also has more planned, such as a cornhole tournament on September 25. If you are interested in becoming an RA, make sure to apply in the spring and email reslife@greensboro.edu for more information. Make sure you attend events and socialize with your RA and fellow classmates!
