First year experience

The first year of college or any new school can come with many different adjustments Some will benefit you and some will have you stuck trying to find a way to maneuver.  Whether you have a hard time just finding your way around campus or talking to new people, each person has a different experience but as first year students we all can relate in some way. I had a chance to speak with a fellow freshman, Jackson Marsh, and asked what his favorite part of freshman year has been so far.

“Really just having control over everything, having my own stuff. Having my room how I want it and doing things on my time, ” Marsh said.  I felt this was an interesting answer, because these are things many people would say are a struggle. I can see both sides but having your own space and your routine how you want it is something I also enjoy, as it comes with more freedom. That freedom can be both a gift and curse at times, but it is up to you to balance that, which can be fun.

On the other hand, I asked fellow freshman Derrick Robinson what the most difficult adjustment has been so far this year. “I would say getting used to different professors and how to build a good relationship with them,” Robinson said.

For some of us first year students, coming from a school where we knew most of the teachers for years, it was not that hard to stay on their good side. To do this in college meant we had to make a great impression on our professors early. One of the best pieces of advice I constantly hear is to build a good relationship with professors. Things like coming in during their office hours usually helps, because it shows that you care enough to take that extra step. Taking this extra step can come in clutch, especially late in the semester when you may need a few extra points to improve a grade.

There are many different adjustments and obstacles to overcome during the first year of college, but they only make the journey to success more worth it.
