Everyone has their reasons for committing to higher education and each path is unique. Sometimes, gaining insight into another person’s journey in college can provide valuable lessons. The Collegian had the pleasure to interview Babatunde Odofin about his experience so far at Greensboro College – he has been an outstanding student at GC academically and has also contributed a lot to our campus community.
Odofin is a senior majoring in biology, with minors in psychology and chemistry. He was born in Nigeria and has been in the United States as an international student for 18 months now. His experiences at Greensboro College have been remarkable, shaping him into a well-rounded individual. During his time at GC, he has formed lasting friendships and learned to navigate life independently while embracing all opportunities for personal and academic growth.

A testament to his leadership and commitment to fostering community, Odofin played a crucial role in the foundation of the Greensboro College International Club (GCIC), where he initially served as the vice president and has stepped it up this year by becoming the president. He has continued to lead efforts on promoting cultural exchange and inclusivity on campus. As president, his goal has been to provide a welcoming environment where diverse perspectives can thrive. As he mentions, “I want to build a community for everyone to come together and learn from one another. Furthermore, I want both international and domestic students to learn from one another; it is not just a club for international students. The goal of this club that fosters cultural understanding and collaboration amongst students. This is something that I feel is extremely important, especially being an international student as well.”
In addition to his leadership, Odofin has dedicated himself to helping others succeed academically. He tutors various science courses and serves as a supplemental instructor for Organic Chemistry. His motivation to assist fellow students stems from a genuine desire to give back and share his knowledge and experiences at Greensboro College. When asked what he likes most about tutoring he said, “My heart and commitment to help others is what makes me want to be a tutor. Teaching others is very valuable because I want to help other students achieve success in their endeavors. I love being able to help students achieve the best that they can.” He believes that by supporting others, he is not only contributing to their success but also enriching his own educational journey as he learns a lot about by being a teacher. He thanks the PEAK for this experience and is grateful for allowing this
His transition from the rigorous educational system in Nigeria has made him capable of handling any challenges that he has faced while at Greensboro College. He appreciates the balance of a lighter academic load, but he understands the importance of proactive learning as it has been engraved in him from past experience in Nigeria. He emphasizes time management and early engagement with assignments, always encouraging his peers to avoid procrastination, as this can lead to unnecessary stress. By sharing this advice, he hopes to create a culture of diligence and preparedness among students.
The strong relationships that he has built with faculty members have helped him enrich his college experience as well. “Every faculty member I have interacted with, especially my biology professors, they have been all amazing. They always have a listening ear and you can talk to them about anything. I love how they are always there to help you and always pushing you through to improve.” Odofin values the mentorship he receives, which empowers him to seek guidance and deepen his understanding of his field of study. His personalized support has fostered his confidence and motivates him to pursue leadership roles within the college community.
Outside of academics, Odofin also prioritizes relaxation and connection with friends in college and family in Nigeria. Whether it is enjoying a walk or playing soccer, he understands the importance of unwinding amid a busy schedule, which is essential for keeping well-being.
As he continues his journey at Greensboro College, he emphasizes that challenges are opportunities for growth: “Connect with those around you and remember that your journey is just as important as your destination,” he advises. This serves as a reminder that with determination and community support, one can transform their college experience into a profound journey of self-discovery and achievement.
“Odofin Experience” exemplifies the enriching potential of higher education. His commitment to fostering inclusivity and personal growth inspires his peers and in a way, highlights the importance to embrace diversity and connection in the academic journey. Now, as he moves forward, he continues to pave the way for others, demonstrating once more that the journey is as valuable as the destination.
