Breast Cancer Awareness Month at GC

by Deaven Hawkins

This new month of October marks the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. For those of you that do not know what Breast Cancer Awareness is all about, it is to honor individuals that have beat or passed away due to the cause of breast cancer. During the month of October, there will be plenty of events at Greensboro College to honor your loved ones that have fought day in and day out during the harsh time of breast cancer.

For every Wednesday of this month, you should wear pink to show your support. You can purchase a pink or grey shirt if you do not have one by visiting your very own Greensboro College Pride Shop. The pink shirt says, “Fight for the Cure,” while the grey shirt says “We fight together.” The shirts are approximately 10 dollars so make sure to get yours before the month of October is over.

In terms of events, on October 8, pink flags on Pride Field were put up which students and staff and faculty wrote on to honor friends or family members that have been affected by breast cancer. In my opinion, this was a great way to express gratitude to your loved ones, even if it was just a simple act of writing a simple note to show your love for them.

Also, during the month of October there were many “Pink Out” games, and students that attended the sporting events were prompted to wear their pink shirts to show their support. On top of that, the athletic teams themselves also decide to do something to honor those who had fallen to breast cancer. On October 8, the men’s soccer team wore pink warms up shirts to show their support. On October 9, women’s volleyball wore pink warm up shirts to show their support as well. The shirts proved to be good luck as the men’s soccer team was able to tie against Mary Baldwin University while the women’s volleyball team won 3-0 against Pfeiffer University.

That is not all – on October 16, the women’s soccer team also wore pink warm-up shirts during their match against Southern Virgina University. It was really cool to see all these athletic teams giving their support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Also, the Greensboro College community that showed up to the games came out and had a lot of energy and wore pink shirts to show support for individuals that were affected by breast cancer. There were also pink treats and drinks that were sold during those games. Of course, I know we all love free items, so it was cool to see that there were free socks handed out to those that attended the games. This tradition of events related to Breast Cancer Awareness Month has been going on for multiple years at GC and it is an honor to write this article, especially having an aunt that recently beat breast cancer last year. Greensboro College is doing a great job with events and making Breast Cancer Awareness Month memorable.
