Are you looking for fun and exciting things to do just off campus? How many of you have been able to explore the sights and sounds of the city we live in? There are many great options around Greensboro, two of these spots are Natty Greene’s and Yum Yum Better Ice Cream.
Since 2004, Natty Greene’s has been the spot to visit for out-of-town guests and locals. Located just five minutes from campus, this Greensboro hotspot serves a variety of pub food and drinks. Not only do they have a variety of foods, but they also have options for different dietary restrictions, making this the best place to hang out with any friends or family. On top of the amazing menu, the low-vibration environment provides the ideal scenery for any social gathering. The layout of the brewery adds a special element of appeal. There are two main floors for seating with a bar, pool table and couches on the second floor. The second floor also gives guests a one-of-a-kind view of the city, day or night.
It is also known for Thursday Night Trivia, a fun way to hang out with friends while also enjoying the game on a big screen TV. Natty Greene’s has made a name for themselves by being the place to go for any game day. The newly renovated distillery is another local attraction that offers beautiful views that can be seen from the seating inside and outside the brewery. It is a lively Friday night scene that is enjoyable whether you are inside or outside.
Asked about his experience at Natty Greene’s, recent Greensboro College alumnus Tegan Griggs said it is a “very cozy, cool Friday night scene” with “good music, nice outdoor seating and is enjoyable for everyone, especially students”. His go-to order is the Elm Street Philly with a side of Southern Cajun Fries.
Just on the other side of Spring Garden Street is Yum Yum Better Ice Cream. It is a Greensboro staple, rich in history right next to the campus of UNCG. It is a short six minute drive from GC and is a great spot to try the famous Yum Yum hot dog.
The hot dogs’ claim to fame is their unique pink color. You can also load your hot dog up with as many toppings as you would like, including classics like ketchup and mustard or go all the way with chili and slaw. They even have the option to add hot cheese to your dog.
I have been going to Yum Yum since I was a kid and my dog of choice is the cheese dog. This unique topping gives you a hot dog like you have never had before. The cheese is hot and melty and meshes perfectly with the savory taste of the hot dog.
To finish off the day with something sweet you can choose from their large selection of ice cream, with 18 classic flavors. This combination of hot dog and ice cream really takes Yum Yum to the next level. Having been in Greensboro for over 100 years, The hot dog shop has a long-standing history in the city. A plain hot dog with ketchup or mustard will only run you $1.65 and $2.25 for a dog all the way. With these prices, it makes Yum Yums a great option for anyone, especially students. It has a very welcoming home -grown, family-style feel and is a great place to grab a bite to eat with friends.
“Yum Yum is one of my favorite restaurants,” said Greensboro College student Griffin Powell. “I love their food and when I go inside it reminds me of home.”This feeling comes from Yum Yum’s humble beginnings, starting as an ice cream cart in downtown Greensboro. Wisdom Aydelette started this business in 1906, and his family still runs it today. His grandson Clint Aydelette now owns and operates the store, keeping his grandfather’s dream alive.
Both of these Greensboro staples offer different atmospheres and styles of food. So, whether you are looking for good for and on your night out, or an old school, homestyle feel Greensboro is the place to be. Next time you find yourself downtown make sure to check out Yum Yum Better Ice Cream or Natty Greene’s.
