As a Dialogue Ambassador at Greensboro College, my role is to help lead meaningful conversations among students on some of the most challenging and important topics of our time. Under the leadership of Dr. Robert Brewer, my mentor in this program, we are in the training stages, preparing to ease discussions promoting understanding and connection.
The goal of the program is to create a safe space for open dialogue on issues like race, identity, and social justice. As Ambassadors in training, we are learning how to guide conversations, ensuring everyone has a chance to share their views and feel heard. It is not about forcing agreement but about creating an environment where listening and learning from each other are prioritized.
This training takes place at Elon University, where we are learning and practicing different dialogue strategies. Brewer handpicked me for this program based on my ability to engage thoughtfully in conversations and my commitment to speak on difficult issues. The qualifications for becoming a Dialogue Ambassador include strong communication skills, empathy, and the capacity to manage complex, often emotional discussions with respect and care. These qualities are essential for leading discussions where participants feel safe and understood.
Brewer’s guidance is invaluable as we navigate the complexities of these dialogues. One of the key lessons we are learning is the importance of active listening. When someone shares their personal experience, especially on sensitive issues, it takes patience and understanding to truly grasp where they’re coming from. When people feel genuinely heard, they are more open to hearing others.
As an African American, I also want to use this platform to speak on personal issues I have experienced, along with other subjects where people often feel unheard. I believe these discussions can have a meaningful impact on the Greensboro College campus community by fostering understanding and addressing issues where many feel marginalized.
As we prepare for our future roles, we know that challenges may arise. Sometimes emotions can run high, and disagreements might occur. However, we are being equipped with the skills to handle these moments with care and respect. Even if participants don’t walk away in total agreement, they can still gain a better understanding of themselves and others.
Being a Dialogue Ambassador in training is reshaping how I think about communication. It is not just about talking; it is about connecting. In a campus community as diverse as ours, this training is giving me the tools to help build those connections.
In a world that often feels divided, programs like this show us the power of conversation in bringing people together. I am excited to be part of this journey, preparing to encourage understanding and growth, even when the topics are tough.
