Greensboro College recently hosted its annual International Week from November 18 to November 22, a vibrant celebration of cultural diversity and global unity. Spearheaded by Greensboro College International Club, the week was packed with engaging events, showcasing the richness of the college’s multicultural community and fostering connections between students from different backgrounds.
The week began with a cultural night at the Student Center, featuring flags from various countries that decorated the venue. The activities included a language mini-lesson where students engaged in learning the basics of several languages such as French, Spanish and Tagalog. Following this event was a scavenger hunt that required participants to use the clues to navigate to each table and answer trivia questions before moving on to the next one. It was a great way to assess students’ global knowledge. The team that won received prizes but the main highlight was the sense of togetherness and laughter that filled the atmosphere. Overall, it was an engaging event that was highly interactive and educational. According to Elmer Ventura, “It is wonderful to witness everyone unite in honoring our diverse identities. This is what makes our campus unique.”

Tuesday featured the much-anticipated international market, where students set up booths selling handmade crafts, jewelry and art made by them. We had several people stop by to purchase items and immerse themselves in the cultural diversity of GC, experiencing intriguing places through the photographs presented by our international students. Additionally, the GCIC was able to invite a food truck to campus to honor International Week. Overall, the event was not only a celebration of creativity but also a chance to learn about the stories and traditions behind each item and enjoy delicious food.

Ornament painting took place on Wednesday outside the cafeteria lobby. In a heartwarming fusion of worldwide traditions, students stopped by to paint ornaments that reflect their cultural heritage or personal interests. The artwork features country flags, beloved designs and illustrations and on Thursday, the final day of the event, these ornaments were used to adorn the college’s Christmas tree in the Main center, symbolizing unity through diversity. The activity created a joyful atmosphere, filled with laughter, holiday music and creativity. It is wonderful to witness how various traditions merge on one tree; it serves as a visual representation of our campus community. During international week, the cafeteria transformed into a global buffet. Students and staff enjoyed dishes from around the world, prepared by our dedicated cafeteria workers. They offered a variety of international dishes that transported everyone to far-off lands with their flavors.

International week exemplifies Greensboro College’s commitment to inclusivity and global awareness. As the president of the International Club, I want to thank the school, the office of the International Programs, GCIC board officers and members as well as everyone who participated in these events. I am excited to see how these events inspire connections, foster understanding and create a sense of belonging for all students. Whether through food, music or conversation, international week reminds us that while we may come from different corners of the globe, we all share a desire to connect, learn and grow. Lastly, GCIC and I wish everyone a joyful holiday season and a Merry Christmas.
