Review: A Spoonful of Sherman

by David Slifer

The second show that the Greensboro College theatre department put on this year was “A Spoonful of Sherman”. It was directed by Perry Morgan Hall, choreographed by Ashley Hyers and This show is a music review that talks about Robert and Richard Sherman, better known as the Sherman brothers, who wrote music for a lot of early Disney works such as Mary Poppins, The Jungle Book and The Aristocats. As we learn about not only the brothers but also their whole family, we get to listen to a lot of the music they wrote, which is part of a lot of people’s childhood.

This show was amazing. The performers did amazing with every song that they performed. With the Shermans, their music did a lot with emotions, and this show did phenomenally, showing us the scope and range that their music takes people. The cast of this show consisted of Azariah Surratt, Casey Johnson, Chandler Pointdexter, DeMari Jackson, Gabby Iwaszkiewicz, Giustino Garcia, Jackie Deane, Jalen Troublefield, John Mottola, Laiken Skinner, Lexi Chester, Walter John Dibbons, Will Hoard and Yahir Bentancourt. Everyone who was part of this cast did such a great job with their singing and dancing, and they made this show such a joy to watch.

Giustino Garcia sang and performed the song I Wanna Be Like You from The Jungle Book. Garcia did a phenomenal job singing the song, dancing and moving to the music. It was a fun performance of his to watch and he did an amazing job throughout the entirety of the performance.

Another performance that stuck out was Azariah Surratt with the song Mother Earth and Father Time from Charlotte’s Web. This was beautifully sung and was a nice song to hear. A lot of the music written by the Shermans are fun and playful pieces, but they made a lot of nice and peaceful pieces of music, and Surratt did amazing with her performance of this song.

With a show like this, it’s great to see a lot of people’s childhood play out right in front of them. It makes us very excited to see what else the theatre department has in store for next semester.
