The Palisades Fire ravages a neighborhood in the Pacific Palisades of Los Angeles
California is currently recovering from the brutal fires that passed through the southern half of the state, specifically in the Pacific Palisades area. The blaze began on January 7 fire quickly grew to over 23,000 acres. Fueled by dry conditions and strong winds, the wildfire spread rapidly, forcing thousands of residents to evacuate while the fire left behind widespread destruction. Hours after the Palisades fire began the Eaton fire ignited, covering over 14,000 acres. Both fires were deemed 100 percent contained by January 10
According to NBC News, at least 29 people have died in these fires, with 17 of them due to the Eaton Fire. Between both fires, 17,291 structures were damaged or completely destroyed. Emergency services worked around the clock to help the affected residents, setting up temporary shelters and providing aid to the families that had to evacuate. Communities have come together to support those in need, offering donations and volunteering in cleanup efforts.
Many celebrities also lost their homes in the fires, including well-known actors and musicians. Some, like Beyoncé, have stepped up to assist their communities by donating to relief funds and using their platforms to raise awareness. Her charity foundation, Beygood, donated $2.5 million to the LA Fire Relief Fund. Others, such as Mehgan Markle and Prince Harry, have even volunteered their time. They appeared at an evacuation center and food bank in Pasadena, where they served food and spoke with locals and emergency workers who were on the ground.
Their efforts have been incredibly impactful with helping affected residents beginning to rebuild their lives.
Payton Wright, a sophomore here at Greensboro College, lives just 20 miles from the Pacific Palisades. She had witnessed the devastating impact of wildfires on her community. “It really affected my knowing that people very close to my family and I lost their homes and businesses in the fire.” Despite the devastation, she remains hopeful about recovery efforts and the resilience of those affected.
