Greensboro experiences largest snowfall since 2018

By Xypher Pino and Griffin Powell

In recent years, Greensboro, NC has had numerous snowfalls, but most of them barely reached two to three inches. However, on the weekend of January 31 to February 1, a winter storm that has not been seen in years swept across the east coast. What was initially forecasted to be three-to-four-inches of snow turned out to be nearly a foot or more in parts of Guilford and Davidson County.

The Greensboro College campus looked unidentifiable – buildings were covered in pure white, as well as all the sidewalks and the fields, making our already beautiful campus an even better sight to behold. For the biggest snowstorm in Greensboro since 2018, many were concerned. Storms like this do not come around very often, so groceries and supplies went quickly out of stock.

“As a person who enjoys the warm weather, I was not very thrilled about getting all this snow,” senior Taylor Cotie says. “My mom and I had to gather as many non-perishable items as we could because we could not even get out of our parking lot – it was that bad. Luckily, I was able to get some cans and other things from the Pride Pantry.”

GC did a great job of supporting our students during the snowstorm. There was consistent communication about the ongoing situation, and vital resources such as the Pride Pantry ensured that students had what they needed for the snow. The dining services staff even slept many nights on campus to ensure that the cafeteria could still provide quality food. We thank the college administration for the way they handled this unprecedented weather with student safety on top of mind.

Though the storm was concerning and required adequate preparation, it was still the perfect time to go out and enjoy life; many students did just that. From making snow angels and snowmen to sledding down the campus hills – fun could be had anytime, anywhere. Sports teams did not have practice, so even athletes were able to join in on all the fun. One would expect this crazy snowstorm to keep people inside and bundled up, but if anything, it brought the GC community even closer together.

“When I heard about the snow, I was thrilled,” says junior Aidan Eller. “We have not had a big snow like this in years. A bunch of my friends and I went out and sledded until around midnight or so. I definitely enjoyed this downtime, especially since I was able to do assignments I had for the next week as well.”

“I thought the snow was really fun,” says sophomore Shaniah Taylor. “Other than all the snow days we got off, I enjoyed going out with friends – especially those who had not experienced snow like this.”

For some, the recent snowstorm was a moment of panic, for others it was a moment of relief. Regardless, whether you like the cold or not, it was a great opportunity for people to have a little downtime and enjoy a short break going into this semester.
