Buddhist monks in a mission to spread peace, kindness, and compassion entered Greensboro, NC on January 19. Their journey through the city was inspiring as the streets were populated with people revering in their aura and positivity.

Mayor Marikay Abuzuaiter and the Greensboro City Council welcomed the monks when they arrived at the Grandover Resort. “What an outpouring of support for the walk of peace and everything they represent,” Abuzuaiter said as she welcomed the monks. As one of the last monks entered the arena, he offered flowers to the mayor. Abuzuaiter stated that she was “truly overwhelmed” by this gesture.

“It was super cool to see the monks in person,” says freshman theatre major Bryson Carter. “While it was super crowded and cold, I think that just added to the awe I have for them. It really goes to show how dedicated they are to this walk and culture.”

This “Walk for Peace” initiative by the monks began in Texas. They are traveling a total of 2,300 miles in 120 days all the way to Washington D.C. The monks aim to inspire unity and create peace in our world through this journey; this is much needed for sure, especially considering the state of our nation today.

“Their mission and goal are wonderful,” Carter stated. “This journey is especially needed and noticed now more than ever. They remind us that peace is not necessarily difficult if we just work toward it.”

The monks’ journey through NC was special – the freezing weather and snowy conditions pouring down our state had not been seen in decades; that did not stop the monks with pushing through with their journey. In addition, when Governor Josh Stein publicly recognized their journey, the monks were very grateful. Bhikku Pannakara, who speaks on behalf of the monks, stated that NC was the first state where the governor recognized their journey.

The monks certainly achieved their goal of promoting love and reducing division around the world; they brought people and communities together. This journey hopefully starts the spreading of more positivity in our nation; it certainly did here in our community at Greensboro College.
