This summer, from July 8 to July 14, Greensboro College Wrestling hosted the biggest camp in Greensboro College Wrestling history. This camp had all the best wrestlers from all over the state—men’s, and women’s—train for a week to prepare for the biggest tournament in the country, Fargo, taking place in North Dakota.
This camp occurred on Greensboro College’s campus in Hanes gymnasium. During this week of training, the men’s and women’s wrestling teams trained three times a day. The men’s wrestling team had three wrestling practices about an hour and a half long, while the women’s wrestling team started their day with a 6 a.m. strength and conditioning session and two more wrestling practices later in the day. The wrestlers were served three meals a day by Greensboro College’s fantastic dining hall staff, and were provided accommodations in Hill Hall to experience living on a college campus.

I was one of the instructors for the wrestling camp and it was an excellent opportunity to work on my leadership. Coaching a group of high-level athletes made me ensure that my direction was clear. I treated everyone equally regardless of skill level and ensured the team maintained their focus.
Demonstrating wrestling moves helped me sharpen my technique because teachers must have mastery-level knowledge of a concept to explain it to their students effectively. It was a valuable experience to be able to teach, lead and prepare these athletes for their upcoming tournament.
After training, the athletes learned that success is built through discipline. Some athletes said that they were losing movement to give the efficient intensity. The problem with motivation is that it is temporary. The discipline to do your best daily is trained and regimented through consistency. To be disciplined, you must be accountable and responsible with how you live your life.
After interviewing the head coach of Greensboro College on how he felt about the NC USA Wrestling Camp, Coach Harty said, “It was an honor for Greensboro College to host this year’s NC USA Wrestling Fargo Prep in Hanes Gym on Campus. We hosted and helped teach the best of the best female and male athletes in the state of NC.”

The director of NC USA Wrestling, Ed Duncan, was highly pleased with his overall experience at Greensboro College. He stated, “We had a great experience at Greensboro College. The athletic setup and facilities were outstanding, and the dining hall service was excellent. Great meals and even better people serving. The campus security and housing check-in team were terrific to work with as well.”
Overall, the NC USA Wrestling camp was a success. This camp was an excellent opportunity to help wrestlers improve their wrestling skills and a wonderful way to bring more recognition to Greensboro College nationwide.
