Gen Z has been a topic in the workplace. Today, people consider Gen Z to be the type who does not like to work, they do not want to work for things they want and that they rely too much on technology. Gen Z grew up around technology, and since technology has progressively grown to be included in our jobs and the workplace, Gen Z knows their way around with technology and knows how to use it efficiently.
One of the more interesting claims I found about this topic comes from an article titled “Gen Z’s not lazy,” where writer Kim Kelly stated, “They are just refusing to put up with the toxic work culture that boomers created. More than any other generation, these new entrants to the workforce prioritize fair treatment on the job and refuse to bend to exploitative or outdated corporate norms.” Kelly believes that Gen Z, in fact, is not lazy or does not want to work hard. They just do not put up with certain things that the older generation did.
In the article, one of the other things Kelly mentions is that “young workers are not lazy, entitled or keen on slacking off — they are simply choosing to reject some of the practices that previous generations were forced to accept.” Gen Z does not want to be overworked and tired if they do not have to. They want to work in a healthy environment where their boss cares for their mental health and they are able to use their ability with technology without being judged.
Gen Z may be different and relies on technology a lot more, but a lot of our world today relies on technology. Rampant technology use is not only seen at work, but also in environments like schools. Even this article you are reading right now was created using technology – that is just what a lot of people use these days. When Gen Z, and the rest of society, does school work, pay bills and contact family or friends, they are using technology. Technology has just about become an everyday thing and we have no choice but to rely on it, so it is important to know how to use it.
The next time you hear someone get mad at a Gen Z individual for using technology, remember this article and tell them how unfair that accusation is.
