Should Division III athletes be drug-tested?

by Jaylon Brunson

I would like to discuss the issue of whether or not Division III athletes should be drug tested. I realize this is a loaded question and people have different views regarding this topic. Division III is the only division out of one, two and three that does not require drug testing regularly unless you are deep in playoffs or going to a championship.

I believe that Division III athletes should be drug tested because without testing, the athletes could have an unfair advantage, especially if steroids are being used. I also think drug testing Division III athletes could save an athlete’s life. There may be an athlete who is struggling with a drug addiction and the drug testing could bring this to the forefront and possibly be lifesaving.

Research shows that Division III student athletes use more social drugs than Division I and Division II athletes.  Studies also show that while Division III athletes’ usage of marijuana has increased, Division I and Division II’s marijuana use has decreased.  The Collegian interviewed a former Greensboro College baseball player, Tyler Pote. He stated that he believes “that all student athletes and all levels should be drug tested because it places everyone on the same level. Unfortunately, there is a false narrative that Division III athletes have no desire to play at the next level whether it be transferring to a Division I school or at a pro level. In fact, not drug testing Division III athletes can result in a player who is using steroids to perform at a high level at a Division III school and being unable to convert the same play at a Division I school because drug testing will become a factor. Steroids may get the athlete to the next level, but they will not be able to maintain it due to the drug testing rules.”

In conclusion, I think drug testing should be done randomly, and if a player tests positive there should be consequences, and in some cases intervention, depending on the drug. There are some Division III athletes who use steroids, which gives them an unfair advantage and is harmful to whatever sport they play.
