Starting college is a very exciting thing, but the challenges that come with it can hit you much harder than you could expect. The first few weeks are full of unfamiliar faces, more responsibilities and less supervision, along with a lot of “Wait, where am I?” moments. Homesickness is real, everything feels unfamiliar and suddenly you realize you are on your own.
Senior Karla Del Castillo from Wellington, Florida knew this feeling all to well. Moving from flat and sunny Florida to North Carolina meant dealing with colder weather and driving on hilly roads for the first time. On top of that, being away from family and friends was lonely. Luckily, Castillo is on the Volleyball team, so she instantly had a grouo to connect with. “Having that team made the transition way easier,” she said.
Not everyone has the privilege of a built-in group and for students who are introverted, meeting new people can feel overwhelming. The key is to start small. Even something as simple as saying hi in class or checking out a short campus event can help you feel less isolated. Finding spots where you feel comfortable, whether that is a quiet corner of the library, a lounge or an outdoor bench can give you a safe space to reset while you gradually build connections.
Getting involved does not mean you have to join a sports team or a big club. Look for interest-based groups, volunteer opportunities or workshops that fit your passions and interests. You will meet people naturally and have something in common to break the ice. Additionally, do not forget about campus resources; counselors, advisors and peer mentors are there to help, especially if things get stressful or confusing.
Adjusting to college life takes time and patience. You are going to have moments where it feels awkward or lonely, and that is okay. Take small steps to explore campus, try new activities and finding your own rhythm will make it easier to feel at home. College is a huge change, but with some effort and an open mind, it can also be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
