GC football plays under the bright lights of Homecoming

By Dallas Fox

Big excitement during Homecoming weekend for your Greensboro College sports teams. A total of three games were played: men’s and women’s soccer team played against NC Wesleyan University, with the women winning 2-0. All the excitement from those games built up throughout the day and when 6:00 p.m. comes, everyone knows what time it is: Pride Football is about to take the field. This was our seventh game of the year, and it was against Brevard College, a team who just came from a loss the week before to LaGrange College.

Around 5:20 p.m, 40 minutes before the game, I took to the field to do my warmup, and the crowd was already there to show their support. Tents lined up on top of the hill filled with people. There was even a bouncy house and other attractions as well. I knew this game would be packed out with GC fans and alumni. When we took the field as a team, it was a feeling I had not felt in a long time – the crowd felt alive and they made us feel like we were their favorite team. The lights shining over the field with a beautiful night sky was the perfect time to play football.

The Pride started the game off by receiving the kickoff and letting the offense take the field. The team offense did not disappoint, marching down the field and scoring, with freshman quarterback Cameron Turner throwing a touchdown pass to Jayden Morrison. The Pride scored their six points and then the extra point to make it 7-0. The Pride defense stood strong, got a stop and forced Brevard to punt. Unfortunately, we had a miscommunication and fumbled the punt return. Brevard used that as momentum and scored a touchdown of their own but missed the extra point to make it 7-6. Early in the second quarter, Brevard went down and scored again, making it 12-7. There was not another score in that quarter until there was less than 30 seconds left. Brevard made it 20-7 going into the half.

Coming back out after halftime, Brevard received the ball and took it to the house on the return to make it 27-7, killing the momentum coming out of the half that was built in the locker room. Brevard would score another touchdown before the end of the game, bringing the final score to 34-7.

Pride football fell to 1-6 with three games left in the season. We hope and work to win out for the school with our next game being home against LaGrange. Despite the loss, we thank everyone for coming out and supporting your football team. We hope to give another win.
