The success of Give4GC

By Kaylyn Pageot

Give4GC is an annual Greensboro College event that lasts 24 hours. It gives the GC community a chance to show support to the college by donating to a variety of areas on campus. From better equipment in our athletic departments to more academic resources on campus, the Give4GC event is a huge opportunity for those in the community to make a positive impact on our campus.

The main event of the day was a 5K held on April 11 at 9 a.m. in front of Main Building. Staff, students and more met up to show their support for GC by participating and donating to the cause. Even alumni were able to show their support. For example, Mark Form, Class of 1968, participated in a virtual 5K at nearly 80 years old. This goes to show the continuous dedication that the community of GC holds onto anyone who becomes part of it. If you want to see more details on the 5K and maybe catch a glance of your friends and family getting active and involved, go to GC Instagram page at @greensborocollege where pictures and details on the event can be found.

Many athletic teams, although not being able to participate in the actual event, were able to secure funding within their respective communities. Sports teams did a multitude of things from raising awareness through social media to participating in the 5K on separate days.

The Women’s Volleyball team took what may be the funniest approach, by allowing their donors to decide who got pied in the face on the team. Grace Young received most of the tasty treats through seven pies to the face. This helped the GC Women’s Volleyball team raise over $2,000 in donations.

Another group who showed support to the Give4GC event was the GC Women’s Lacrosse team. Although they could not participate in the event due to a game scheduled the same day, they ran a separate 5K to show support for those who would be running on April 11 and to our donors.

“I believe that Give4GC is impactful to our program in so many ways,” said Carly Walton, GC Women’s Lacrosse player. “It helps get us new gear every season along with sticks, goggles and anything to make the program successful. It helps with our meals for away games and our overnight trips. The donations give us opportunities that we would not be able to have otherwise.”

For the GC Women’s Lacrosse team, the funds will be mainly invested in gym equipment and travel expenses.

Needless to say, the event was a huge success. GC crushed the original goal by 34 percent and with 325 donors I know everyone at GC would like to give a big “thank you” to those who showed support.

As of currently making this article, we are still receiving donations! I believe that demonstrates many things about Greensboro College. It shows the school is a place that finds strength in its community. Even those who are not active members of the college still have and show major impacts on the campus. We are a college that finds strength in numbers and knows how to provide unforgettable experiences. This event so close to the end of the semester helps people see how much of an impact GC has on them. Students go home to friends and family while others begin new careers and lives. However, at the end of the day we are one pride.
