The Pride started the season with a big win over crosstown rival Guilford College. The Pride beat Guilford 48-7 on Sept. 5 at Pride Field in the 25th Annual Gate City Soup Bowl. For the students and fans, this was more than just the first game of the year, it was a rivalry game that brought a lot of excitement to campus.

At the beginning of the game, GC came out ready to win. The Pride scored 13 points in the first quarter while the Quakers of Guilford scored its only touchdown of the game. GC continued to build their lead in the second quarter and went into halftime 20-7.

The second half was where the Pride really took over, putting up 21 points in the third quarter and another touchdown in the fourth quarter. By the end of the game, GC had scored 48 points while holding Guilford to only one touchdown.

Quarterback Cameron Turner had an impressive performance for the Pride, throwing for 261 yards. Kyjuan Westmoreland led the rushing game with 84 yards while KJ Brown finished with 99 receiving yards and a touchdown.

As a team, GC finished with 578 total yards, which showed how well the offense was able to drive the ball throughout the game. The defense also played a huge role in the victory. GC held the Quakers to only 230 total yards as a team and forced three turnovers. After Guilford scored in the first quarter, the Pride defense did not allow another touchdown for the rest of the game.

The 48-7 victory gave GC a strong start heading into their season and gave students and fans a bunch of reasons to be excited for this year. The Gate City Soup Bowl showed that the rivalry is way more than football but bringing the Greensboro community together while supporting a food drive. Now, with a 1-0 record, the Pride will look to build on this performance as they continue through the season.
