“Everything happens for a reason” is something I did not fully understand when I first got to Greensboro College, but now, looking back, it all makes sense.
Ever since I was a kid, I always saw myself as a student-athlete. Baseball was not just something I did, it was part of who I was. Life did not follow the plan I created. My grandmother got extremely sick, I stepped away from baseball, my major changed and I became a caregiver. I also took classes I never thought I would take, and I became a Dialogue Ambassador, which was something younger me would not have expected. At the time, it felt like everything was shifting and now I see that everything was aligning.
If anyone has been around me, you know I do not speak much. I have always been more of an observer, someone who listens and takes everything in. Stepping into spaces where conversation mattered was not expected, but it changed me. I learned that your voice does not have to be loud to matter. It just has to be real, and Greensboro College gave me the space to grow into that.
One of the biggest things I will take away from my time here is the experience inside the classroom. I have been part of great classes that focused on understanding, discussion and growth. The lessons I learned go beyond textbooks. They shaped how I think, how I communicate and how I see the world.
What stands out the most is how much the professors genuinely care. They understand that life happens and they do not just see you as a student, they see you as a person. They work with you, support you and push you to be better even when you are unsure about your own direction. There were times I did not have everything figured out, but they still found ways to bring the best out of me. They gave me opportunities, guidance and advice that I will carry with me beyond college.
It is not just the professors, it is the entire community. I enjoyed every class I have been in, not only because of the professors but because of the students. It feels like a family — a group of people who are passionate about their work and about yours. People who want the best for you and who have a strong perspective on life, school and their goals.
Even though I do not speak much, I truly appreciate every classmate I have had. I also want to recognize the staff, the people who work every day to keep this campus clean, safe and welcoming. That does not go unnoticed, and it is part of what makes this place feel like home.
Greensboro College never made school feel like a job, and for that I am thankful for everyone I have crossed paths with. Through everything — baseball, caregiving, changing paths and stepping into new roles — I have grown in ways I did not expect. I came here with a plan, but I am leaving with something better, and that is perspective. I am not just earning a degree. I learned how to adapt, how to show up for others and how even in silence, your presence can speak volumes. Most importantly, I learned that everything really does happen for a reason.
